Perseverance has paid off for connections of Knight Bachelor, who thrashed his rivals for the second race on the trot in the 2m4f handicap hurdle.

Having won by 21 lengths at Cartmel, the Warren Greatrex-trained six-year-old ran out a 16-length winner in the colours of Andrew Merriam to take another step towards fulfilling the potential he showed as a novice.

Greatrex was at Ascot to saddle Boite in the 2m handicap and, speaking by phone, said: “He’s a class horse in this grade. The key to him is having good ground or quicker and he has started to show the promise he showed as a young horse.”
