The weather on the Rowley Mile was not unlike the Craven meeting with a cold wind and showers, which was ironic given that the Group 3 Abernant Stakes was transferred from its traditional curtain-raiser slot in April.

There were two previous winners of the featured sprint in the seven-strong line-up but neither saw which way Oxted went, with the four-year-old giving jockey Cieren Fallon a Group success at the first attempt.

Last year's champion apprentice sent the 7-2 chance on at the Bushes to deny Breathtaking Look, and said afterwards: "It's brilliant to ride a Group winner and even to be given the chance. I thought I was in with a good shout when I looked at the field this morning and thanks to Mr Teal for sticking with me. Oxted is a very smart horse."
