Josies Kid lands nursery to continue impressive first year for Alice Haynes
Former apprentice and amateur jockey Alice Haynes swapped her riding licence for a training one only in February but has enjoyed a remarkable start to her burgeoning career and notched her 14th winner courtesy of Josies Kid in the 5f nursery.
The son of Ardad, who was a breeze-up purchase by former jockey Freddy Tylicki, failed to hit the mark on four previous starts and was having his first run since a gelding operation.
Haynes, who was enjoying her first win on the Knavesmire, said: “The gelding operation made him focus on the job. When he hit a flat spot before he could never find another gear. Now he looks like he will probably stay six furlongs. The soft ground helped; he skipped through it.”
Looking to build on a memorable first season, she added: “Next year we'll aim for 20-25 winners and try to get that better calibre of horse to win nicer handicaps, Listed or Group races, and attract a few more owners.”
Haynes was denied win number 15 when newcomer Gin O’Clock was beaten into second by the Ralph Beckett-trained Luna Dorada in the mile novice for juveniles.
Levey strikes gold
Sean Levey partnered the Hughie Morrison-trained Surrey Gold for the first time to land the feature 1m6f heritage handicap.
The three-year-old colt had shown little since scoring at Newbury in May but reeled in longtime leader Star Caliber to seal the £75,000 prize by half a length.
Levey went on to complete a double on Luna Dorada.
