Thursday: Listowel

Joseph O’Brien’s terrific run of form at the Listowel harvest festival continued on Thursday with a 70-1 treble, taking him to six winners for the week.

Breeze-up purchase Lark In The Mornin got the afternoon off to a perfect start with a smart performance in the mile maiden at odds of 5-6, while 2-1 favourite White Caviar won the other maiden on the card over 1m4f under Declan McDonagh.

In between, Flying Scotsman took the honours for O'Brien at 12-1 in the feature premier handicap.

Colin Keane struck for home on San Martino off the final bend in the 1m4f contest, with Wayne Lordan hard at work on Flying Scotsman as he gave chase.

With his mount responding to every question, Lordan gradually reeled in the leader to win by a length and a quarter. Autumn Evening ran on late to take second from San Martino.

It was the fourth day in a row that O’Brien had collected the feature event and assistant trainer Brendan Powell said: “Wayne gave that a great ride. He knew once he turned in that Flying Scotsman would stay the trip well. He’s a genuine horse when you ask him for an effort.

"He’s been disappointing over hurdles and it’s nice to get him back again. He’s one of those who goes flat through a race but will always give you an effort at the business end."

Flame too hot to handle

Flame Of Eire continued her red-hot run by completing a four-timer with a brilliant display in the 1m1f handicap.

Raised 4lb for last month's Bellewstown win and competing outside her own age group for the first time in handicap company, the three-year-old filly scored by a length and a half to leave trainer Andrew Slattery eyeing a quick return to Bellewstown next Wednesday.

He said: “She just keeps improving. We might go again at Bellewstown and I'll probably aim her for the Lincoln next year. The draw was the only negative I had today. I knew she was as good as last time, if not better. I know it's a bit greedy going for five in a row but why not?”

Family Jewels

It was a special day for the McCullagh family as Run The Jewels comfortably landed a third win of the year in the 1m handicap.

The five-year-old, who was returning from a four-month break, is trained by Michael McCullagh and was ridden by 3lb claimer Scott McCullagh, his grandson.

Assistant trainer Danny McLoughlin said: “He disappointed at Cork last time. They just go the extra stride quicker over the straight seven furlongs at Cork, which caught him out, and we always thought he'd be better over a mile.

"He likes racing with plenty of daylight, so it helped him to be back to a bend today from the wide draw.”
