Joseph O'Brien in exalted company as double brings up first seasonal century
Joseph O'Brien brought up the first domestic seasonal century of his career with a double, becoming the first trainer other than his father to do so since Jim Bolger and Dermot Weld achieved the feat in 1994.
Zoffany three-year-old Royal Blend, the even-money favourite, initiated the double with a clearcut success. Her breakthrough at the eighth attempt under Dylan Browne McMonagle confirmed her ability to handle testing ground.
Dante's Pass brought up the double in the 7f conditions race and there was plenty to be impressed by considering his inexperience against older rivals. Partnered by Shane Crosse, the 9-2 shot followed up his debut win at Listowel 16 days earlier to make it two from two.
Newcomer Allihies causes 50-1 upset
There was a shock result in the 7f juvenile maiden when the Kevin Coleman-trained Allihies ran out a commanding winner at 50-1 on his debut under Emmet McNamara. His defeat of 10-1 chance De Vega's Warrior resulted in a Tote Exacta payout of €3,035.78.
Coleman told Racing TV: "We got him from the breeze-ups, having come from Denis O'Flynn's Old Carhue Stud. We've had success there with Queens Carriage and when we saw he wasn't sold [at £23,000] we did a deal.
"He's done everything right at home but his draw [in stall 16] on testing ground was an unknown. We thought he'd be in the first five – he has a great engine."
