Jessica Harrington and Shane Foley record hat-trick of maiden winners
Thursday: Thurles
Jessica Harrington and Shane Foley stole the show on the track's only Flat card of the year with a 47-1 hat-trick of maiden winners.
The last daughter of Galileo to land the opening fillies' mile maiden was Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Peaceful and this year's winner Foniska, also by Galileo, could bid to emulate her after recording a smart success at 5-2 for the Niarchos family on her third outing.
Harrington said: "She had been promising to do that and has been a slow learner, but she enjoyed being out in front. I don't think she'll run again this year. She could come back in a Guineas trial. She'll get a mile and a quarter, and probably a mile and a half."
Newcomer Village Voice, a 38,000gns breeze-up buy, finished well to land the mile median auction maiden at 11-2 and bring up win number two.
"She's a nice filly who we've always liked," said Harrington. "She's in the [Irish EBF Auction] series final on Sunday week at Naas so had to run here. She's a lovely, big, scopey filly."
Dual purpose performer The Very Man rounded off a cracking afternoon for Harrington and Foley when justifying favouritism in the 2m maiden.
Harrington added: "He deserved that as he had been running well on the Flat. He's a fantastic horse."
"I've always loved it at Thurles and they do a great job. They've done fine work over the summer with different things like the car park, and the stable yard is spotless. There's lovely ground too. They really deserve credit."
'Willie said if I got things right I'd win'
Willie Mullins recorded his joint-biggest priced Flat winner in more than 20 years when 28-1 chance Raving Royal caused an upset in the 1m4½f three-year-old handicap under Seamie Heffernan.
The Barnane Stud-owned filly had shaped like a future maiden winner when finishing third on her Navan debut in May, but she failed to build on that promise in the three starts that followed.
"Willie said to take my time and ride her with confidence, and if I got things right I'd win," said Heffernan. "It's nice to be getting good rides and she could improve."
Coakley back among the winners
There was a welcome winner for absent trainer Charles Coakley as 25-1 shot Itsalonglongroad, ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, provided him with his first success since October 2013.
Owner Patrick O'Leary said: "Charlie broke his pelvis recently and is in hospital but hopefully he'll make a full recovery in six weeks."
And it was a landmark day for Nathan Crosse, who rode out his claim aboard 40-1 shot Three Comets in the 2m handicap.
