James Lambe looking to Punchestown with Sundrenched after Scottish raid
Tuesday: Ayr
Sundrenched made the trip to Scotland worthwhile for Irish trainer James Lambe after he landed his first success over hurdles.
The seven-year-old, who finished fifth in the 2021 Punchestown Champion Bumper, was beaten a long way in six previous starts over hurdles but found a new lease under Liam McKenna to win the 2m4½f maiden hurdle by one and a half lengths.
Lambe, speaking to Racing TV, said: "He's been a good horse this fella, he won his bumper beating a horse called Hes A Hardy Bloke who's now rated 131, he was just struggling for a long time to get a grip going hurdling.
"Liam said the race didn't really run to suit, he had to ride him a lot handier – I said the most important thing was you were in the right place at the right time where it counted at the winning post."
Handicaps appear to be on the agenda for the Irish runner, with a possible return to the Punchestown Festival on the cards.
"I wouldn't be surprised if we might look at something like Punchestown for the Martinstown Opportunity over two-and-a-half miles, which would suit him by a really good gallop," Lambe added.
"Probably his best run was the Champion Bumper at Punchestown, he was fifth, the horse behind was Ramillies [sixth in Albert Bartlett], so he's got good snippets of form."
Derek double
Cheltenham Festival-winning jockey Derek Fox had just three rides at Ayr but returned with two wins and a second on Tuesday.
First he partnered Destiny Is All, who justified odds-on favouritism up in trip, in the 3m3f handicap chase, before ending the day on a high note when Douglas Talking conquered his only rival in the novices' limited handicap chase.
