'It's taken an amazing effort to get him back' - Magna Sam upsets the odds in Edinburgh National
Magna Sam bounced back to cause a 22-1 upset on his first start for Alastair Ralph in the bet365 Edinburgh National.
The nine-year-old stepped up in trip on his stable debut and his first start since being pulled up at Aintree in May.
After twice winning at Musselburgh for Sophie Leech, he boosted his course record when beating last year's winner Captain Cattisock under Alex Edwards.
"We've had a quiet season so it's great to have a winner like that," said Ralph. "It's taken an amazing team effort to get him back to form.
"He's so easy to train. He's genuine, takes it all in his stride and is a proper national horse. He doesn't overcomplicate anything."
Big festivals next for Notlongtillmay
Notlongtillmay extended his unbeaten record over fences to three when landing the bet365 Frodon Novices' Limited Handicap Chase.
The 11-4 shot stretched nine lengths clear of Half Shot to provide Laura Morgan with her 33rd victory of the season under Brian Hughes.
The trainer is one winner off last season's career-best return of 34 and hopes to aim Notlongtillmay at the major spring festivals.
"That was a seriously impressive performance," said Morgan. "He's seems to have progressed no end since joining us last November.
"We'll probably aim for Aintree or even Ayr and then go from there. He's a very exciting horse to have and is probably the best we've got."
Off the mark
Conditional jockey Charlie Maggs secured his first victory over jumps when winning the bet365 Scottish County Hurdle aboard Collingham for Donald McCain.
