'It's sweeter when Lewis can ride the horse' - Macey's delight as family strike

It was a family affair at Southwell as husband and wife Lewis Edmunds and Jessica Macey teamed up to score in the 6f handicap for lower-rated horses.

Trainer Macey and jockey Edmunds had plenty of confidence in Dark Side Thunder and the 10-11 shot made no mistake with a comfortable success.

"It’s great to have another winner and it makes it sweeter when Lewis can ride the horse," said Macey.

"I wouldn’t say we were over-confident about the horse’s chances today but we were quite hopeful.

"The surface was riding a little slower today and I think that suits him well. He was still a little green and is a big horse, so I hope there is better to come."

So Grateful won on his last visit to Southwell and showed his appreciation for the track when taking care of 13 rivals in the higher-rated 6f handicap in the hands of Joanna Mason.

Backed into 85-40 favourite after being available overnight at 10-1, the Mick and David Easterby-trained gelding was making amends after running too freely when beaten at Nottingham on his last outing.

Comfortable victory

The Mouse King was the widest-margin winner of the day, romping home by seven lengths under Sam Feilden in the 7f handicap.

The winner is trained by the jockey’s auntie Julia, who said: "He’s only a little horse, so we thought it would be a good move to use Sam’s 7lb claim.

"I was a little worried about him going down to seven furlongs but they went a decent pace, so it was not a problem," she added.
