'It's been a bit overwhelming for him' - poignant success for Return Fire
Friday: Hexham
Lucinda Russell paid tribute to owner Nic Crofts after Return Fire won the opening 3m handicap chase, with the victory a poignant success for the Tay Valley Chasers Racing Club.
It was a first win on his second chasing start for Return Fire, who travelled strongly and jumped boldly under Patrick Wadge to record a dominant 13-length success.
The trainer said: "This was the first horse Nic bought for the Racing Club and his son Patrick died in his sleep a couple of nights ago.
"Patrick was absolutely bright as a button and a super little boy. Nic's been so brave and organised this trip for around 100 members. I think it's been a bit overwhelming for him."
Russell, who wasn't at the course, added: "Just after Covid he bought Return Fire with his wife Lyndsey. They run the club together and he's always been very enthusiastic."
The trainer doubled up when her other runner De Legislator, of whom she owns a third, justified 4-9 favouritism in the 2m4f novice hurdle.
The Oldcastle point-to-point winner was bought for €170,000 in April and the yard subsequently moved to buy the second-placed Snake Roll, who bolted up at Kelso last month.
