There is a god. The unrelenting avalanche of rain experienced on day two had given way, although racegoers now faced the wind, no more so than on Trundle Hill.

The steep climb to the top rivals the finish at Towcester and Cheltenham. It’s not for the faint-hearted, as four bookmakers who turned up, and soon returned home, had found out the day before.

Colourful deckchairs, picnic blankets and even two canine friends, chasing the kind of chewed tennis ball only a dog owner would touch, filled the hill on ladies' day. It had been the very opposite on Sussex Stakes day.
