'It's absolutely fantastic' - joy for Martins and owner as Midnight strikes
Thursday: Market Rasen
The Martin family and owner Andrew John celebrated a significant winner when Midnight Ginger powered home in the opening 2m½f conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle.
Trainer Andrew Martin ended a 265-day winless spell with the mare's two-and-a-half-length success under son James, who notched his first winner as a professional.
It was also a momentous day for John, who was tasting victory for the first time in his red and black silks with Midnight Ginger, who was the first horse he bought as an owner in the summer.
"It's absolutely fantastic to get back on the board again, especially for our owner as this is his first horse and first winner," the trainer said. "He's the chairman of Aberavon Rugby Club in South Wales and the silks are the same as his team's colours.
"I'm sure there will be a few glasses of champagne at the rugby club tonight – we're over the moon for him."
The Chipping Norton-based trainer was proud of his son, a farrier by trade who turned professional earlier in the year.
He added: "I know he's my son but he rides very well and hopefully he can kick on with a few more rides and winners. It's a tough sport for jockeys and trainers so it's great to get that first."
Potter weaves magic
Trainer Ryan Potter bagged a quickfire 65-1 double with Light Flicker in the 3m handicap chase and High Grounds in the 2m7f handicap hurdle.
