'It's a thrill' - dream start for new trainer as he lands 140-1 Redcar treble
Monday: Redcar
James Horton made a dream start to his new solo training career when saddling a 140-1 treble at Redcar.
The former assistant trainer to Sir Michael Stoute had saddled just five runners before Monday but returned home with a treble following the success of Phantom Flight, Il Bandito and Asjad, who were all partnered by PJ McDonald.
"It was a thrill to get that first winner with my name on the trainer's licence," Horton said after Phantom Flight's success. "It's certainly more stressful than when I was assistant, but more enjoyable too.
Horton took over operations at Manor House Farm, Middleham, as private trainer for John and Jess Dance, who cut back on runners last season but now bring a host of fresh talent to the yard.
"It's great to have the support of John and Jess," Horton said. "We're all finding our feet at the moment and having so many runners today sort of came along by accident.
"I haven't set a target but this is good start. We have 32 horses and 27 of them were unraced on March 1, so if we can train 15 winners it will be a magnificent effort by everyone in the yard."
