'It was a great result' - Philip Rothwell seals one-two in thrilling style
Thursday: Tramore
Philip Rothwell hailed a “great result” as his six-year-old mare Game And Glory edged out her stablemate Siberian Star in a thrilling finish to the 2m4½f handicap hurdle.
The Jack Foley-ridden 8-1 chance Game And Glory clung on to record a first career success with 11-1 chance Siberian Star a neck behind under James O’Sullivan to give Rothwell a one-two – the Tote Exacta paying €91.40 for a €1 stake.
“It was a great result,” the trainer told Racing TV. "I was actually going to keep Game And Glory for Cork on Sunday but when I saw the favourite looked like he might come out we said we’d come here. I’m glad we did.
“Siberian Star had totally lost his way, he just got a little bit disinterested during the summer. James gave him a brilliant ride and I thought he was actually going to get there coming down the hill.”
O’Sullivan gained instant compensation for his near miss as he took the following 1m7f handicap chase aboard the Noel Dooly-trained Where’s Bunny.
Rothwell’s other runner, Georgie’s Gal, only beat one rival in the closing bumper won by Willie Mullins’s debutante Tina Meehan.
Feature success
Trainer David O’Brien enjoyed his first winner of the season as Kilbunny Pontic justified 13-8 favouritism in the 2m4½f mares’ maiden hurdle.
It completed a double for jockey Sean Flanagan, who had steered First Dare to a shock 16-1 win for Elizabeth Doyle in the opening 2m maiden hurdle.
Also riding a double was Darragh O’Keeffe, who scored on Doyouthinkso and helped Majavango to a first win over fences.
