'It did come as a surprise!' - 50-1 winner Yukon leaves James Moffatt stunned
Wednesday: Sedgefield
Modest Flat performer Yukon made an excellent start to his career over hurdles for Jimmy Moffatt with a 50-1 shock victory under Charlotte Jones.
The five-year-old, who had a rating of 57 on the Flat for David O’Meara, took the 2m1f maiden hurdle from Onesmoothoperator and Summer Moon, whose Flat marks were vastly superior on 95 and 108 respectively.
Having made his challenge at the third last, Yukon kicked on at the final flight to win by two lengths from Onesmoothoperator, who was placed on the Flat at Ascot as recently as August.
Moffatt confessed Yukon’s big-odds triumph had been unexpected on his first start for the Vilprano Partnership following his £5,500 purchase last autumn.
He said: “If it had been an ordinary-looking maiden hurdle I would have fancied him but it looked strong.
“It’s not entirely a surprise that he could win a maiden hurdle – I just didn’t think it would be this one. Fortunately, the syndicate didn’t listen to me and they had their fivers and tenners on.”
Red-hot form
Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero maintained their hot Sedgefield streak when Oceans Red bolted up in the 3m3f handicap chase, which took their strike-rate at the track to a remarkable 45 per cent.
The six-year-old skipped away from the field to win by an eased-down 24 lengths under Toby Wynne.
Promising debut
Winning pointer Thermusa left an emphatic impression when making all to score on her debut under rules for trainer Ruth Jefferson in the 2m4f mares' novice hurdle.
