Is Dewhurst hero Chaldean a Classic winner in waiting? Racing Post experts' view
'This result won't be giving the big outfits any sleepless nights'
I wouldn't call him a Classic winner in waiting. He's certainly likeable – a nice big stride and great attitude – but that's three times now he's had his own way in front. It was hard to believe what an easy lead Frankie Dettori got; he wasn't going to drop that opportunity.
The performance of the race came from Royal Scotsman, who got every yard of the 7f trip and probably should have won. That effort now opens up plenty of options for him. But for racing's powerhouses, Godolphin and Ballydoyle, this result won't be giving them any sleepless nights.

'He's firmly in contention for Classic glory'
Andrew Balding enjoyed 2,000 Guineas success with Kameko in 2020 and now has the ammunition to land the Newmarket Classic next year. The Frankel colt has stepped up in class in each of his five starts and now has a Group 1 to add to his already impressive CV.
He demonstrated his credentials with a smart performance in the Dewhurst, assisted by a strong ride from Frankie Dettori who seems to get a nice tune out of him. Based on how calm Chaldean looked throughout the race, I feel he’s firmly in contention for Classic glory next year.

'Chaldean will be a serious contender'
Chaldean has progressed exceptionally well this season for Andrew Balding with victories in the Acomb Stakes, Champagne Stakes and now at the highest level in the Dewhurst.
His narrow victory under a typical Frankie Dettori ride from the front means he warrants respect in the 2,000 Guineas, but it is too soon to call him a winner in waiting. If he trains on at three, he should be a serious contender, but bigger challenges lie ahead against the likes of Little Big Bear and Sakheer.
