It made no sense but, then again, Jim Bolger stopped making sense a long time ago.

He couldn't possibly be edging towards 80; he couldn't possibly ask the 2,000 Guineas winner to run in the Irish equivalent six days after he finished sixth in the French one; he couldn't possibly win a Guineas with a horse who disappointed in the Derrinstown 13 short days ago and was found to have a nasal discharge afterwards.

Yet here he was at the age of 79 watching two colts with his fingerprints all over them fight out the finish to the Irish 2,000 Guineas, putting clear daylight between themselves and the best of the rest. It defied logic, a pastime Mr Bolger has proven to be particularly good at over the six decades he has trained.
