In-running punters stung for £14,615 after 1.01 shot is denied in thriller
Wednesday: Hereford
There was a dramatic conclusion to the 2m5f handicap chase in which Skinflint looked set to score having jumped the last well, three lengths clear of the Jonjo O'Neill-trained Joly Maker.
A total of £14,615 was matched at 1.01 on Skinflint on Betfair in running but Joly Maker stayed on well under Jamie Brace in the last 100 yards to pip the ten-year-old and provide the amateur rider with a first winner in 927 days.
It was the highest amount staked at 1.01 on a losing horse since £15,362 was traded on Hooflepuff at Wolverhampton in December, with the winner as high as 220 at one stage.
Brace was more relieved to be back in the winner's enclosure than anything. He said: "I wasn't really sure if I wanted to do it anymore. The boss has had a lot of faith in me and I;m just thankful for JP [McManus] for keeping me on him."
Career-best for Charlie
Charlie Deutsch added to his growing collection of personal milestones as just a few weeks after riding a first Grade 1 winner he posted a career-best seasonal tally of winners with a double.
Deutsch reached the landmark figure of 39 winners for the season aboard Fuji Flight in the 3m1f handicap chase in a local success for Venetia Williams before capping off a fine day's work in the bumper on the Sam Thomas-trained Shomen Uchi, who was never off the bridle.
Williams completed a quickfire double of her own when Bellatrixsa took the 3m1½f mares' handicap hurdle under Harry Bannister, who also brought up a double but received a two-day whip ban after getting the odds-on Godrevy Point up by half a length in the 3m½f maiden hurdle.
Also celebrating a career-best season over jumps was Richard Spencer as Pump It Up's first win over obstacles under James Best took the Royal Ascot-winning trainer to four winners.
