John Jenkins was full of praise for Connor Beasley after the in-form jockey sparked a 59-1 double on the veteran trainer’s Basharat in the 6f novice stakes, overturning the odds-on Cover Name to score by a length and a quarter of a length.

Jenkins, speaking after the three-year-old won on only his fourth start since arriving from Andrew Slattery in Ireland, said: "It’s nice to have a winner. I hadn’t had him long when he ran his first race but he’s a big strong horse. I was pleased with him and he’d win again I think."

Jenkins, who has held a licence since 1988, fondly recalled Beasley riding a winner for him at Southwell in 2014, saying: "He rode a winner for me years ago on a horse called Mishrif. There’s a good horse called that now, isn’t there?"

That victory came in Beasley’s career-best year of 61 winners, and he could surpass that total after victory in division one of the 6f handicap on the David Barron-trained 16-1 shot Polam Lane took him to 53 for the year.

Snugfit holds on

Paul Mulrennan rode a winner on his only mount of the day with a bold front-running ride on the Rebecca Menzies-trained Major Snugfit. The five-year-old just clung on to score by a short head in the 1m4f handicap to make it two wins from the five-year-old’s last three starts on the Flat.

Six of the best for Steel

The Mick Channon-trained Steel An Icon made it a sixth win of 2021 in the 1m6f amateur jockeys’ handicap. Serena Brotherton did the steering for the first time and the pair scored by three-quarters of a length.
