Donald Trump has gone from blond to grey. Bristol De Mai has gone from grey to white. They differ in hair colour but are united in having no comprehension of what it means to concede defeat – and even if you voted for one of the other candidates, it was hard not to rejoice in the latest Betfair Chase triumph for the indefatigable hero of Haydock.

This was, is and in 2021 will probably again be Bristol De Mai's Gold Cup. Not all winter stopping points are springboards to Cheltenham.

There is far more to the season than four days in March and when hocks are deep in mud on a November afternoon at Haydock there is no sight more stirring than Bristol De Mai.
