'If he couldn't win off that mark he was never going to' - Attack lands gamble
Tuesday: Market Rasen
Unattractive form figures did not deter backers of Lightning Attack and he repaid their confidence by winning the 2m handicap hurdle.
Trainer Ben Haslam did not join in the support of the six-year-old, who was sent off at 9-2 after being available at 12-1 in the morning.
Haslam was confident of a better showing from Lightning Attack, who was beaten 46 lengths or more in his previous three hurdle starts.
"I didn't have any money on him but good luck to those who did," he said. "I thought he had a decent chance on a mark of 74 for his first handicap and if he couldn’t win off that mark he was never going to.
"We've been scratching our heads with him a little. In his second race at Sedgefield last time he didn’t seem to get home and fell in a huge hole. We gave him some time off and he was ridden with more restraint today, and the track was probably also a help."
Menzies strikes again
Rebecca Menzies has struck a rich vein of form – enjoying winners on the Flat as well as over jumps – and she recorded success when Schalke struck in the 2m7f handicap hurdle under Brian Hughes.
Patiently ridden, the seven-year-old cruised through to lead at the final flight and went on to comfortably defeat Shah An Shah.
