'I'd never been as confident' - owner delighted as Largo Bay goes in again
Monday: Brighton
Owner Joe Lane's confidence in Largo Bay proved justified as the four-year-old held on gamely to land the 1m4f handicap under George Rooke.
The Michael Madgwick-trained gelding had won over course and distance in June and, returning from a ten-week break, gained a fourth career win when holding off the unlucky Temur Khan, who was denied a clear run.
Speaking to Sky Sports Racing, Lane said: "I woke up this morning and thought he could do it, but even at the lowest level of racing things have still got to go right. He dug in – he's a battler. I couldn't be more over the moon!
"Wherever we go with him we know we've got a chance. He could be 50-1 and you've still got a chance. I was always confident he would do it – I'd never been as confident."
Largo Bay also holds a special place in Lane's family as his first victory for the owner in February earlier this year meant his wife got a sausage dog, who is named Largo after the horse.
"She said she wanted a sausage dog and I was like we don't need another dog and she said 'we don't need another horse', so I said if this horse wins we'll get a dog. Back in February when he won you can hear my children screaming 'we're getting a sausage dog' – so we've got a sausage dog named Largo!"
Lee off mark
Jockey Clifford Lee had not previously ridden a winner at the seaside track, but put that right by riding a double.
Lee partnered Karl Burke's Georgiava to victory in the 6f fillies' maiden, before winning the 6f seller on the Tony Carroll-trained Red Alert.
