'I was very confident' - Daryl Jacob just needs Cartmel for full house of tracks

Daryl Jacob would not have expected such an easy opportunity to notch his first career victory at Catterick than on Thomas Macdonagh in the 3m1f novice chase, when he cantered to victory as the only finisher in a dramatic contest.

The field of three was whittled down to two during the race when the disappointing favourite Diomede Des Mottes was pulled up going into the final circuit.

His remaining rival, Eva's Oskar, then took a crashing fall at the 13th fence and the eight-year-old was required to put in only a clean round of jumping under Jacob on his sole ride of the day.

The Grade 1-winning jockey needs a success at Cartmel to achieve the rare feat of riding a jumps winner at every track in Britain.

Jacob said: "He did it really nicely for me the whole way around and I was very confident with his jumping, he's very sure-footed.

"I don't come up to Catterick very often, so it was nice to get a winner here. It'll be great to do the landmark, but I'll have to wait until May at the earliest!"

Mixed day for McCain

Donald McCain experienced the highs and lows of racing with an impressive winner followed by an unlucky loser.

McCain's blistering start to the new year continued with Bareback Jack's victory in the 1m7½f novice hurdle to make it five wins from his first five runners of 2021.

Malpas looked set to make that six, but fell at the final flight of the 2m3½f novice hurdle with victory at his mercy.

Anderson impressing

Aaron Anderson's fantastic form continued when Oliver's Island landed the 3m1½f handicap hurdle to give the 7lb claimer his third winner from his last four rides.
