'I struggle to see why any punters would take 2-1 on Jonbon for the Arkle'

'I'm confident Banbridge at 12-1 is a better bet than Jonbon at 2-1'

As has been typical with Jonbon, I was impressed but someone, somewhere always appears to be more so. Once he got a chance to unfurl his rangy stride and meet the fences down Warwick's back straight, Monmiral simply could not live with him, although part of that was down to his own, rather more careful jumping.

Enthusiasm is what you get as standard with Jonbon. That has translated into how he takes his fences and if that can be relied upon then you would expect him to deliver 160+ performances before too long. With any luck, the first chance he gets will be in next month's Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices' Chase at Sandown.

I backed Banbridge at 12-1 for the Arkle after his win at the weekend and remain confident I hold a better bet than 2-1 about Jonbon. Although after the latter's chase debut, I may have to concede that I'm not on the likelier winner.

'He'll blow most chases apart if ridden positively like he was there'

As chasing debuts go it was hard to fault. He travelled well, jumped fine and quickly put distance between himself and the others, who were no slouches themselves at the fences.

It was encouraging to see him jump so well at what appeared to be a sound pace throughout and it’s going to take a top-class novice to keep tabs on him as he has always possessed a high-cruising speed. He will blow most chases apart if ridden positively like he was there.

I don’t think 2-1 is a bad price for the Arkle. Constitution Hill is the only horse to have beaten him and he won’t be lining up. If Jonbon gets there on the day he might be odds on.

'The price cuts are an overreaction'

It was a visually taking performance by Jonbon because he slammed a Grade 1 winner in Monmiral and a top-class handicap hurdler in West Cork.

However, the value of the form is up in the air. Monmiral shapes as if he would appreciate a longer trip and West Cork was ridden negatively to pick up the pieces. I liked Jonbon’s jumping, but price cuts for the Arkle to 2-1 from 7-2 are an overreaction and I struggle to see why any punters would be itching to take those odds.

In my view, he probably should have been 6-1 for the Arkle before Warwick and 7-2 now. I want to see more evidence he's the real deal and can distinguish himself from Ireland's best two-mile novices.
