'I still love having winners' - Fact Flow continues fine April for Burchell
You might think it an April fool that an 84-year-old eight-horse trainer can be undefeated with his three runners this month, but that was nearly the case for Dai Burchell, whose Petite Power was nabbed on the line in the 2m7½f handicap chase by Gleno.
Burchell, based around 30 miles from the course near Ebbw Vale, began April in style when Winged Isle won at Ffos Las on Thursday, while Fact Flow struck in Chepstow's 2m3½f handicap chase.
A short head stopped the winning run, but Burchell, nearing 40 years with a licence, said: "It's been a good start to the month, even if Petite Power was just caught late on.
"I'll wait and see how long I go on for, but I still love having winners.
"We didn't run many of the horses when it was wet through the winter, but we'll be trying for a few more winners with the spring weather now and it won't be for the want of trying if we don't have any!"
Cold but content
Owners were allowed on track following the easing of coronavirus restrictions in Wales and Dai Walters was among them to watch Before Midnight land the 2m handicap chase.
He owns the eight-year-old with James and Jean Potter and said: "It was freezing cold and you couldn't really chat to anyone, but I was happy to go."
Before Midnight is trained by the in-form Sam Thomas, a tenant of the owner's.
"Sam's got a good boss now!" Walters joked.
