It was a case of mixed emotions for trainer Mike Sowersby, who ended a two-year wait for a winner but wasn't actually watching as his 12-1 victor Supreme Steel stayed on powerfully under Aaron Anderson to take the 3m novice handicap chase.

The Yorkshire-based trainer, whose only winner in the past three seasons had come at Uttoxeter in July 2019 with Simply Lucky, also ran Strategic in the same race, who was pulled up.

Sowersby said: "I didn't see it. I went to the other one that pulled up as I thought something must have gone wrong, but his saddle had slipped so I didn't actually see the last mile, but I will see it sometime.

"The girl that's with me, Tracy, even though I told her to deal with Supreme Steel whatever happened, she made sure we swapped horses so I could take him into the winner's enclosure, which was a nice touch.

"I'm very relieved as I have been in a pretty low place. I never thought it was gonna come. I can't say I've had loads of placed horses either because I haven't, but I knew I could still do it. Hopefully we've turned a corner."

285-1 treble for Hughes

Brian Hughes continued his blistering early season form as he rode a big-priced treble to take him to 62 winners for the season.

Hughes combined with Donald McCain as Away At Dawn made all the running for a first win over fences at the fifth attempt in the 1m7½f novice chase before Bob's Bar made the perfect start to his hurdles career to complete a quickfire double for the trainer.

The former champion jockey then demonstrated his determination to regain his crown as he rallied John Quinn's Geonice to get up by a neck in the closing 2m7½f handicap hurdle to complete a fine day's work.
