'I knew nothing about her' - Brian Ellison surprised by amateur's winning ride
Saturday: Cartmel
Izzy Marshall was an unfamiliar name to Brian Ellison but the trainer was full of praise for the rider after she guided Snookered to a 20-1 shock victory in the female jockeys’ handicap hurdle.
Ellison, who booked the 22-year-old amateur from Oxfordshire after a recommendation from agent Wilson Renwick, said: "It was her first ride for us and I knew nothing about her, but it was a great ride.
“I wasn’t expecting that from Snookered. He’s not been going well but was badly handicapped and is only a 120s horse at best."
There was a nasty incident in the race when Peltwell swerved off the track and appeared to be heading for the crowd before running into an ambulance.
Her trainer Neil Mulholland said: "It was unbelievable and very scary. Fortunately, nobody was hurt and Peltwell seems fine apart from a few cuts."
Four for Johnson's Blue
The most valuable event on the card was the £38,100, 2m6f handicap hurdle, which fell to Johnson’s Blue, who was notching his fourth victory in a row.
“He took a little time to find his feet but he’s going from strength to strength now,” said trainer Mark Walford.
“His previous four wins had all been at Hexham but he had run there because there were no other suitable races at the time, and I had no concerns about him handling this course.”
Mark Weatherer, based in Malton, North Yorkshire, had his first success as a trainer when Glan Y Gors came out best in the 2m1½f handicap chase.
The winner was partnered by Tabitha Worsley, who started the meeting with a success when her mount Bright Sunbird was awarded the race in the stewards’ room.
