'I expected this filly to do things' - Muir's confidence pays off
Tuesday: Ffos Las
William Muir had his decision vindicated to keep hold of Profound Alexander when she got off the mark at the tenth attempt in the 7½f maiden.
The joint-trainer had grown frustrated with the Kodiac filly as she failed to score during her juvenile career, but he was confident the three-year-old would eventually get her head in front and he bought her back when owner Noel O'Callaghan decided to part ways.
"When the owner wanted to get rid of her last year, I bought her because she has potential," said Muir.
"Phil Stradling went halves with me as he's never had a horse, and I trained for his brother-in-law and twin sister.
"I expected this filly to do things and go and win us races and I was getting a little bit frustrated when she wasn't doing that."
The operation Muir and Chris Grassick run in Lambourn has been going smoothly with 17 winners now this year.
"These horses don't get trained differently to how they did ten years ago, they get trained the same way and a lot of hard work goes into it," added Muir.
"We graft and the horses are thriving, so it makes everything a lot easier."
Valuable colt
The €500,000 purchase Lord Bertie recorded a first career victory on his second start for William Haggas in the 7½f juvenile maiden.
The son of Wootton Bassett, who holds an entry for next year’s Cazoo Derby, scored by two and a quarter lengths under Tom Marquand.
It brought up an across-the-card double for Haggas, as Kyeema won the opening 7f maiden at Catterick.
