'It's not right to say it's a massive gamble' - Williams on well-backed winner
Wednesday: Lingfield
The well-backed Huberts Dream justified favouritism when landing the first division of the 7f nursery handicap for Stuart Williams.
Huberts Dream was available to back at 16-1 on Tuesday evening but was sent off at 2-1 before stretching two and a half lengths clear from the Joseph Parr-trained Revolucion under Richard Kingscote.
The two-year-old finished down the field in two maidens this summer over six furlongs and five furlongs before coming home last of ten in a 1m½f maiden at Nottingham following an 83-day break last time.
"He ran a couple of ordinary races when he was fairly green and had a couple of niggly problems," said Williams. "He ran a decent race at Nottingham last time and the trip just stretched him a bit.
"We were quite hopeful he'd be able to run well off his mark at a much lower grade than he was running in maidens. The horse was tipped in the morning and halved in price, so it's not right to say it's a massive gamble but I told the owners I felt he had a bit in hand."
The son of Oasis Dream, who is owned by Opulence Thoroughbreds, made his handicap debut off a mark of 63 for Williams, who has sent out 35 winners this year, with 28 of them coming on the all-weather.
In 2004, the Williams-trained Exponential landed a huge gamble at Nottingham after being backed from 100-1 down to 8-1. He opened his account at the second attempt under David Allan in a maiden.
Back in business
Jean-Rene Auvray recorded his first winner since July 2019 when Ummsuquaim landed the 1m4f handicap under Mohammed Tabti.
The three-year-old was sent off at 28-1 after finishing down the field on his last four starts, but bounced back to form to get the better of favourite Ruskin Red by a length off the bottom weight of 8st 3lb.
