'I can do the job' - one of Newmarket's smaller trainers ends 601-day drought
Friday: Wolverhampton
Newmarket trainer Andi Brown enjoyed a first winner in 601 days as his Mr Fustic landed the opening 1m½f handicap.
The 28-runner drought was ended by the Dylan Hogan-ridden winner and advertised the training ability of Brown, who only has a handful of horses from his stable on the Hamilton Road.
Mr Fustic kicked clear in the final furlong to record his first success at the tenth attempt having got within a head of victory at Lingfield on his penultimate run.
"We haven't had a winner for a long time, but he was due one," Brown said.
"I'm not a commercial trainer. I don't hang around in bars looking for owners, but I can do the job. People would rather send horses to bigger yards and spend more, it's just the way it goes. It'd be nice if we could get a few more horses."
Of the winner, he added: "He's a good horse and we've just been unlucky with him. I'm so pleased as he deserved to win and, hopefully, now he'll be a little bit higher in the handicap we can look at races on the grass at the better tracks.
Surprise winner
David Simcock will field outsider Light Infantry in Saturday's Qipco 2,000 Guineas, and the stable got a pre-race boost following the victory of 20-1 newcomer Maktoob in the 1m1½f novice stakes.
Bans given
George Bass and Dougie Costello received three-day suspensions for rides on the beaten runners Red Skye Delight and Just Albert in the second 1m1½f handicap on the card.
