Richard Johnson had better beware. With the help of his friends in the north Brian Hughes is out to wrest the jockeys’ title from his grasp.
Hughes made a decent fist of catching the reigning champion last season and will have increased ammunition this time round after being signed up as number one jockey to Donald McCain.
Plenty of other trainers in the north of England and Scotland will be backing Hughes this time round as he tries to become champion for the first time.
