John Gosden and Frankie Dettori were obviously alive to the likelihood of the King George becoming tactical with four Ballydoyle horses in opposition, and they will also have been alive to the possibility of unexpected tactics being employed.

As we all did, they also knew that despite the Aidan O'Brien's quartet being headed by a Derby winner, the one to beat on all known form was Crystal Ocean.

Most expected Hunting Horn, who was drawn immediately to Enable's inner – the pair occupying the two widest stalls – to go on and help force the pace, but instead he was initially held back, which kept her wide, while Norway forced a furious gallop.
