'His name means obsession, it means a lot' - emotional win for hands-on jockey
Friday: Ffos Las
Estehwadh means obsession in Arabic and Georgia Cox certainly feels that about the two-year-old she bought, named and has now ridden to a first victory at the sixth attempt.
She chose George Boughey as Estehwadh's trainer to allow her to take a hands-on approach in riding him out in Newmarket and she was confident he could step forward in the 7½f nursery despite odds of 14-1. He did as expected, winning readily from odds-on favourite Leading Company in the colours of Mohamed Saeed Al Shahi.
Al Shahi was praised by Cox praised for the connection and she described the winner as one of her best given her obsession with the son of Profitable.
Cox, riding her first winner since July 2020, said: "I've been lucky to ride Mohamed a lot of winners in my early days and we've kept in contact a lot. He gave me the opportunity to buy him and I ride him out and give Mohamed the feedback. I've enjoyed the journey.
"It's great to pay him back. I named him and everything, so it means a lot. I only ride him now [as a jockey] and this is what I've been waiting for. I think he'll be consistent now. He just wasn't sharp enough early doors."
Estehwadh could be set for a quick reappearance at Epsom on Tuesday in a 7f nursery.
Above par
Rob Hornby was out on the nearby golf course in the morning and, while his performance was described as a "bit ropey", he had more joy on the racecourse as Captain Wierzba ran out an impressive winner of the 7½f novice.
