Despite an absence of eight months from the racecourse, many punters latched on to the chance of Hiorne Tower in the 2m½f handicap and the six-year-old did not let them down by galloping to victory.

The John Best-trained gelding was backed from 9-1 in the morning down to 6-1, and proved solid on course in the face of support for many of his rivals before returning at 11-2.

Those who participated in the punt could have been forgiven for ripping up their betting slips after halfway as Robert Tart was not sitting pretty in the saddle but up the home straight the pair began to pick up powerfully.
