'He's on a roll' - Nicholls targeting Group races with improving sprinter
Saturday: Doncaster
Tees Spirit continued to climb up the sprinting ranks with a blistering display of speed to destroy his six rivals in the feature 5f handicap.
The 15-8 favourite was sent into a clear lead at the two-furlong pole by Barry McHugh and stretched clear of his toiling pursuers, going on to win by three and a quarter lengths from Texas Man in front of a healthy crowd bolstered by an after-racing performance by McFly.
A winner of the valuable Epsom Dash in June, Tees Spirit was racing off an 18lb higher mark compared to the start of the season and trainer Adrian Nicholls thinks he might be good enough for some black type.
Nicholls said: "We haven’t done anything different with him but his confidence is sky high and he’s on a roll.
"We only have 20 horses and it’s great for us to have one as good as this. He hasn’t stopped improving yet and he might be good enough to be aimed at Listed and Group races eventually.
"He’s shown he likes this course, so the Portland Handicap is certainly a consideration for his next race."
Double for Danny
The Green Man was an even easier winner, cruising clear in the final two furlongs of the 6f novice to complete a double for Danny Muscutt, who scored with Hope You Can Run in the mile nursery earlier on the card.
Hope You Can Run is trained by Charlie and Mark Johnston, who clinched a double of their own when Miss Dynamic won the mile fillies' maiden.
