'He's just coming right' - Frost bites back as Approach The City strikes
Tuesday: Southwell
Kevin Frost "wouldn’t have known where to go" if Approach The City had not won on Tuesday – fortunately for him, he does not have to find out.
His new recruit, a dual winner at Dundalk for James McAuley in Ireland last year, took advantage of the lowest mark of his career to land the mile handicap for horses without a win this year.
"We wouldn’t have known where to go if he hadn’t won today," the trainer said after his 13-2 success. "He’s rated 58 and we thought he was a lot better than them. He works with horses a lot better than that grade."
Approach The City had been a gambled-on favourite on his first run for the yard at Kempton in October, but Frost added: "It wasn’t us who backed him last time. I think somebody just thought he was well handicapped. He hadn’t run for nearly a year and we thought he’d need it.
"I’ve had him four months and he wasn’t the soundest of horses when he came and he bled in Ireland. He’s just coming right."
John Egan was stood down from his remaining rides after being unseated from Island Of Skye after a furlong.
Mixed day for Boughey
George Boughey added another winner to his memorable season when Attrazione took the mile nursery but also suffered his first on-course fatality in his fourth season with a licence.
"We’ve had a cracking year on 132 winners in this country and 135 in Europe," said the man who made a Classic breakthrough with Cachet in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas last spring.
"We’ve had lots of winners, with some really nice horses to look forward to next year. These are bonus balls at the end of the year. We’re not necessarily running the smarter types at this time of the year, but they all serve a purpose and winners keep staff, owners and trainer happy."
Attrazione got off the mark at the eighth attempt and Boughey added: "I hope she can go on and progress. We’ve tried to target one of the Arc bonuses for the winter. She’s no star but there’s a programme for her through December."
Banbrook Boy suffered a fatal injury in the mile handicap and his trainer said: "He’s been a very sound horse. It’s the first time it’s ever happened to me and it’s a sad day. My thoughts are with the owner. Sadly it’s one of the horrible parts of the game."
Hiya says bye to rivals
Hiya Maite had been no match for half-sister Jeans Maite here on Friday but with her out of the way, he was backed from a morning 5-2 into 4-5 favourite before landing the 5f handicap in fine style by three and three-quarter lengths.
"I expected him to win but not by that far," trainer Roy Bowring said.
"He was unlucky last time that Jeans Maite was in the race and she was in form,” said Lewis Edmunds, who rode the winner. "On her day there are not many that can beat her round here. It was quite a competitive race as well."
