Richard Johnson forsook a trip to Ascot for an away day in the north and secured a double that prompted his main rival to throw in the towel in the battle for the jockeys’ title.

It was easy to see why the champion gave up the opportunity to pitch for big prizes nearer to home, as victories on Pearl Of The West and Apache Jack edged him closer to a third championship.

Johnson maintained his lead of 25 after nearest pursuer Brian Hughes also landed a double with Our Lucas and Dr Sanderson.
