'He's got a good chance of being Group class' - El Caballo excites Karl Burke
Wednesday: Newcastle
Karl Burke is eyeing lofty targets with El Caballo after the promising three-year-old made it three wins on the spin under Clifford Lee in the 6f conditions stakes.
The odds-on favourite gave weight away to higher-rated rivals and still comfortably drew clear to score on his first start of a year which could include a trip to Royal Ascot.
Burke said: "He's a lovely horse, he's a very relaxed and lazy type, you wouldn't know what's left under the bonnet.
"Unfortunately he got a little injury after he broke his maiden at Carlisle so we had to sit still with him, and the owners have been very patient.
"He's got a good chance of being Group class. All being well, he'll go down to Lingfield a week on Saturday. After that he'll definitely head back to Newcastle for Good Friday, as he's qualified for that."
The trainer added: "On the turf we'll just see where we are. He'd certainly be worth a trial for the Commonwealth Cup or he might develop into a Jersey horse."
Six of the best
Jane Chapple-Hyam's Internationalangel extended her remarkable winning sequence to six in the 7f handicap. The five-year-old, who cost Richard Fahey 110,000gns as a yearling, began the winning sequence for trainer Robert Stephens at Yarmouth off a mark of 63 in August.
Picked up by Chapple-Hyam for 19,000gns after that turf triumph, the improving mare quickly racked up a four-timer at Chelmsford and showed no signs of rustiness on a first start for two months here as Robert Tart steered her to a sixth win in a row off a significantly higher mark of 92.
Chapple-Hyam said: "We haven't been surprised with her progression – she's a trier, and that's the battle, she wants to win.
"Hopefully she has a Listed race in her at the All-Weather Championships. She can carry the weight as we saw today."
Novice double
Jack Mitchell rode a double for Simon and Ed Crisford with Figures and Anthem National both getting off the mark on their second starts in the 1m2f and 7f novice contests respectively.
