There could have been no more topical winner at the start of Investec Derby week than Humphrey Bogart, who opened his jumping account at the second time of asking in the 2m maiden hurdle.

Nicky Henderson’s gelding finished fifth in the Epsom Classic behind Harzand in 2016, when in the care of Richard Hannon, and looks the type who can make the grade over hurdles later this season.

In a messy race Nico de Boinville was happy to get a lead before making his move three hurdles from home and the pair steadily drew clear of Jumping Jack for a ten-length verdict without the rider going through the gears.
