'He looked a happy horse again' - gelding works a treat for King Power's Lampang

Monday: Ayr

King Power Racing went close in the feature 6f handicap last year with Bielsa, who chased home subsequent Stewards' Cup scorer Commanche Falls, but went one better this time round as Lampang made a winning seasonal reappearance under Paul Hanagan.

The jockey, who got on the board at the Scottish track’s first Flat meeting of the season on the Richard Fahey-trained Life On The Rocks, steered Lampang to victory on his first start since a gelding operation.

The five-year-old’s success was a fourth winner from King Power’s last five runners and racing manager Alastair Donald said: “It was a very good performance. I think gelding has made a big difference, he looked a happy horse again. Last year he was rather unfortunate, he just had endless excuses with bad draws, every time he was the wrong side of the track."

Although Bielsa went on to big-race success at the track in the Ayr Gold Cup after this race last year, Lampang could be set for a different approach with Donald adding: “He seems to thrive in these smaller fields so we might try and stick to these races for him.

"We were very pleased to have three winners on Saturday and we’ve got quite a few more good chances this week and there’s lots of promising horses waiting in the wings so crossed fingers it can continue."

Family affair

Jim Goldie trained Class Wan and her daughter Classy Anne to victories around Ayr and the strong family formline was evident once more as Classy Al, the first foal out of Classy Anne, got off the mark at the eighth time of asking in a 6f handicap under Ben Robinson.
