'He has it' - Lucinda Russell full of praise for 17-year-old winning jockey
Conner McCann enjoyed a memorable first winner on his first ride over jumps when landing the 1m7½f handicap hurdle.
The 17-year-old struck on 11-8 favourite Diamond State for his boss Lucinda Russell, who said: "I'm absolutely delighted for him – he has it. He's had a few rides on the Flat and we suggested he should go over jumps as he's a brilliant schooling jockey.
"He used to bring his ponies and use our gallops, then he came to work for us when he was 15. He was actually so young we had to get special dispensation from the school.
We're a very close-knit team. It's a great atmosphere and we set strong principles and guidelines – Peter [Scudamore, assistant trainer] is very good with the kids who want to be jockeys, too."
The Grand National-winning trainer completed a double when Izzy's Champion stayed on stoutly under Stephen Mulqueen to beat the Dianne Sayer-trained Jackhammer by a short head in the 2m chase.
Red Giant toughs it out
Outsider Red Giant showed his resilience when landing the feature 3m6f handicap chase for trainer Jennie Candlish and Sean Quinlan.
The ten-year-old made all and repelled the challenge of The Ferry Master to land the four-runner contest at odds of 7-2. Generator City was travelling well before unseating Brian Hughes.
