'He enjoyed the fast pace and fast ground' -Highclere win in East Anglia again
Monday: Huntingdon
Highclere Thoroughbred Racing kept their good recent run in East Anglia going when Coolnaugh Haze won the 2m handicap hurdle in front of a bumper crowd of more than 3,000 at the Cambridgeshire track.
Six days after Cachet carried the famous silks to success in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket, the 5-1 chance showed a decent turn of foot of his own to win for Philip Hobbs and jockey Micheal Nolan.
There was also decent turn out from the winning 'Cool' syndicate, including Gerry Ferris, who said: "He's always been a good jumper, which has won him the race. He enjoyed the fast pace and the fast ground."
Extravaganza Day
What was billed as Family Extravaganza Day kicked off in fitting fashion for Martin and Lynn Jones when Hardy Boy won the opening 2m4f conditional jockeys' hurdle in front of many of their extended family and friends.
The 5-2 chance came off a strong pace to deny Beholden under a cool ride from Luca Morgan.
Martin Jones said: "Hardy Boy was originally a birthday present to my wife and today has been a real family affair. We've long had horses with Ben Pauling of which the best known would be Two Smokin Barrels. She now has a two-year-old colt by Jack Hobbs who we are very much looking forward to."
Moore on right tack
Gary Moore all but wrapped up the track's leading trainer award for the second year running when Transatlantic justified odds-on favouritism in the 2m novice hurdle.
The Sussex trainer is in line to bag the £5,000 prize of tack to go with a similar amount from the Fairfax Saddles company he won a year ago.
Winning rider Niall Houlian said: "That's 91 winners for the yard this season, which is a remarkable achievement."
Back with a bang
A well-backed favourite with a name like Danny Whizzbang was always going to prove popular on a family day, and so it proved when the 11-8 chance landed the feature 2m7½f handicap chase.
The nine-year-old had cost his owners nearly as much in vets bills as training bills in recent months but it all came together when he won decisively under Harry Reed.
Part-owner Trevor Dunne said: "Fair play to Milton Harris to bring this horse back from a string of issues, including with his teeth. He could well win again shortly on the back of that."
Shetland pony first
The first Shetland pony race to be staged at Huntingdon before racing was won by nine-year-old Grace Miller on Merkisayre Calvados who, in usual course fashion, came up the stands' rail to land the spoils.
The two-furlong event was a competitive event with 15 runners and one of 25 such events to be staged across the country in 2022.
Organiser John Lamb said: "I train most of the horses and jockeys that you see here today and our leading graduates from these series have been current Flat jockeys George Wood and George Rooke."
