'He deserved to go and win again' - Chapmanshype ends losing run in style
Monday: Newton Abbot
Chapmanshype, once rated as high as 146 when contesting a Grade 3 at Aintree, ended a run of eight races without a win when scoring by 24 lengths in the feature 2m5½f handicap hurdle.
The Jamie Snowden-trained eight-year-old had not won since landing a Fontwell novice chase last May, but ended the longest losing spell of his prolific career under Gavin Sheehan.
“He’s got an incredible strike-rate really,” said Snowden of Chapmanshype, who was running off a rating 17lb below his last winning hurdles mark. “That was his ninth win from 25 starts. He was a victim of his own success and rocketed up to a ludicrous mark of 146, so back down to 125 he deserved to go and win again.”
Chapmanshype could bid to follow up under a penalty at Worcester on Thursday. Snowden said: “We’ll have to have a look at it. This race kind of fell apart because they went very fast in front, but we’ll see how he is in the morning and make a decision then.”
Trainer and jockey just missed out on another winner when Fortunate Fred was just denied by the Jackie du Plessis-trained Haloa Mail in the 2m2½f maiden hurdle.
Snowden added: “It’s unfortunate that Fortunate Fred led in front of the line, behind the line, but just not on the line – but that’s the way the cookie crumbles. He deserves a bit of luck – he’s not had a good time of it and hopefully his time will come before long.”
