Hawkbill flying high after Group 3 success in Al Rayyan Stakes

There were shades of Hawk Wing’s runaway success in the Lockinge Stakes on this day 14 years ago as Hawkbill spreadeagled his field in the Group 3 Al Rayyan Stakes.

In the end, the winning margin in a race better known as the Aston Park was nowhere near Hawk Wing’s 11-length demolition, but the damage had been done early in the home straight under a confident William Buick.

“We purposely went out there to lead because that’s what caught us out in France,” said winning trainer Charlie Appleby.
