Harry Fry rises to the challenge with well-regarded Samarquand

On the face of it, Samarquand's success in the £21,400 introductory hurdle proved to be easy money for connections.

It didn't quite play out that way on the track though, as the strapping four-year-old, trained by Harry Fry for owners Phil Fry (no relation) and Charlie Walker, showed his immaturity before getting the job done as the 2-5 favourite in the four-runner contest.

Despite the odd nervy moment, Harry Fry was happy and said: "Ludlow is a great course for putting on this prize-money and I couldn't believe the low turnout. The race was only worth £10,000 less than the Grade 2 novice hurdle at Cheltenham tomorrow!"
