Jim Crowley gears up for big Baaeed mount with Listed win aboard Alflaila
Sunday: Pontefract
Jim Crowley won the Sky Bet Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer Festival Pomfret Stakes in the Shadwell Estate colours he will wear aboard the unbeaten Baaeed in a slightly more prestigious mile race on Wednesday.
He came from last to first to take this Listed event by a length and a half on the Owen Burrows-trained Alflaila and the jockey said: ”I was always comfortable. Turning in I always felt I could get there.
"He’s not a bad horse. He’s a three-year-old who was getting lumps of weight but it was a tidy race and he’s progressive.
"He ran a lovely race last time at Newmarket and was beaten by a very good horse. Now he’s got his head in front and I hope he’ll keep progressing.”
Happy honeymoon
What a honeymoon. Happy couple Ryder and Alex Sugden swapped Majorcan sunshine for West Yorkshire rain to enjoy a winner on Sunday.
Their dash back home paid off as Piecederesistance got the better of a last-furlong tussle with Colinton to give them an extra wedding present.
The pair, who live in Rutland, were married last weekend and headed out to the Balearics but were determined to be present to see the horse they have with trainer Micky Hammond.
"We flew into Birmingham this morning and we fly back from Leeds Bradford tonight,” said Ryder Sugden. "We did hope he’d do well. We knew he was going to come here and Micky seemed quite keen on him.
“We’ve had horses for four years and the first winner I had was here, so that’s quite nice.”
It’s their time
It was no surprise to see Mark and Charlie Johnston advertise their good form with a double on the eve of Glorious Goodwood, where their yard has won the trainers' award no fewer than 13 times.
Nor was it any shock their Lowther Stakes entry Can To Can stepped up on her debut effort with an all-the-way five-length win in the fillies’ maiden under Ben Curtis.
But stablemate Asdaa had been well held in all three previous runs this term before his last-gasp win in the mile handicap, getting up just in time for jockey Jason Hart and bricklayer Dave Bowman.
The Wakefield man, part of the Owners Group syndicate involved with the winner, said: “I’m due to renew my share and this was the decider as to whether I would or not.
“It’s fantastic, it’s the first time I’ve had an owner’s badge, this is my local course and we’ve had a winner. I joined three years ago for a bit of fun and it’s a hobby, I don’t expect owt back.”
What a difference five days make
A week that began with the course unable to water because the weather was too hot ended with persistent rain falling as the Sky Bet Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer Festival came to a close.
Long-serving managing director Norman Gundill said: “We stopped watering on Monday due to the heat. We took advice from the agronomists who said the water would lie on the top, be heated by the sun and scorch the grass. I have never known it happen before.”
