The fast-finishing Savoir Vivre came within a head of landing the Deutsches Derby under Freddy Tylicki but managed to reverse that narrative in yesterday’s Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville when just holding the late challenge of Siljan’s Saga.

For a four-runner race, this was a Group 2 with more than its fair share of twists, not least of which was the winner’s attempt to cock his jaw and pull himself up crossing the Polytrack heading into the back straight, while Christophe Soumillon took Garlingari to the extreme outside in search of better ground.

Maxime Guyon was alive to Savoir Vivre’s ideas and the pair made virtually every yard, first seeing off the odds-on favourite Erupt, before rallying to deny last year's winner by a neck.
