The presence of the Scots Guards and Red Devils gave the opening day of Aintree a military theme but there was no disguising the main attraction as Guy Disney, a former captain in the British Army, carved out another piece of racing history in the Randox Health Foxhunters'.

The inspirational Disney became the first amputee rider to compete over Aintree's famous Grand National fences and, although he trailed home last of the 12 finishers on Gallery Exhibition, the experience left him yearning for more.

"It was magic, very special," said Disney, 36. "Clearly I'd have liked to have been closer up but the ground is hard work out there and he's a good-ground horse.
