Despite appearing to be more interested in stargazing in the closing stages, the Richard Hannon-trained Ateem ran out an emphatic winner of the feature mile handicap at the expense of topweight Spirit Of Belle.

The three-year-old, making his handicap debut, was given a very patient ride by 1,000 Guineas winning-rider Sean Levey as he bided his time before asking his mount for a telling effort in the straight.

Ateem seemed to have other ideas when encouraged along as he carried his head high and wavered off a straight line a couple of times, however Levey’s strength came into play as he galvanised his mount to put his best forward for a two-and-a-half-length verdict.
