Considering the very wet winter and spring, there was probably no more topically named winner than Groundunderrepair, who stayed on gamely in attritional conditions to take the spoils in the 3m½f handicap hurdle.

Winning trainer Warren Greatrex, who was bronzed following a recent skiing holiday in France, said: “It was really hard work for the horse out there on the testing ground but he has done well even though it is probably going to take a good few days to get over his exertions.

“The plan had been to go novice chasing with him but we've run out of time with all the abandonments and waterlogging so we will wait until the new season comes around in May and then go chasing. I am certain he will be as good if not better over fences.”
